About20 years ago I had one of those wonderful moments when research takes anunexpected but fruitful turn. I had been studying toddler memory and wasbeginning a new experiment with two-and-a-half- and three-year-olds. Forthe project, I had built a model of a room that was part of my lab. Thereal space was furnished like a standard living room, albeit a rather shabbyone, with an upholstered couch, an armchair, a cabinet and so on. The miniatureitems were as similar as possible to their larger counterparts: they werethe same shape and material, covered with the same fabric and arrangedin the same positions. 20年ほど前，あることを契機に私の研究は思いもかけない，だが結果的には実りの多い転換を果たした。当時私は幼児の記憶を研究しており，２歳半と３歳の子どもを対象に新しい実験をしようとしていた。この実験のために，私は研究室の中に部屋の縮小模型を作った。研究室は少々粗末ではあったがよくある居間のようなつくりで，布張りのソファや肘掛け椅子，戸棚などがあった。この部屋になるべく似せた模型を作ったのだ。家具の形も材質も同じで，カバーなども同じ布を使い，配置も同じにした。
Forthe study, a child watched as we hid a miniature toy--a plastic dog wedubbed "Little Snoopy"--in the model, which we referred to as "LittleSnoopy's room." We then encouraged the child to find "Big Snoopy," alarge version of the toy "hiding in the same place in his big room." Wewondered whether children could use their memory of the small room to figureout where to find the toy in the large one. 実験では，私たちが「小さなスヌーピー」と呼ぶプラスチックの犬のミニチュアを「小さなスヌーピーの部屋」と呼ぶ模型の部屋に隠すところを子どもに見せる。それから「大きなスヌーピーが，大きな部屋の同じところに隠れているよ」と言って，これを探すように仕向ける。小さな部屋についての記憶を，大きな部屋で人形を探す手がかりにできるかどうかを調べようとしたのだ。
Thethree-year-olds were, as we had expected, very successful. After they observedthe small toy being placed behind the miniature couch, they ran into theroom and found the large toy behind the real couch. But the two-and-a-half-year-olds,much to my and their parents' surprise, failed abysmally. They cheerfullyran into the room to retrieve the large toy, but most of them had no ideawhere to look, even though they remembered where the tiny toy was hiddenin the miniature room and could readily find it there. 予想通り，３歳児はうまくできた。ミニチュアのソファの後ろに小さな人形があるのを見ると，大きな部屋に入るなり本物のソファの後ろを探した。だが私や親たちの予想に反して，２歳半の子どもではまったくの失敗に終わった。子どもたちは大きな人形を探そうと元気よく部屋に駆け込んでいったものの，小さな模型の部屋でどこに小さな人形があったか覚えていたにもかかわらず，どこを探せばよいのか全く見当がつかないようだった。
