The Purpose
By the development of the image generating technology such as CG and Image
processing,
the "visualization" that visualizes the output of scientific technical
calculation in the field of
education, observation measurement, statistics, plays an important role
as a way of
communication between "data and people" or "people and people"
with its creativity of
expression. Also, its fields include wide range of subjects from science
to economy: science,
engineering, medicine, landscape architecture, market data analysis in financial
industry, etc.
So, we can imagine that "Visualization"will be developed furthermore
as a strong research
supporting tool for the next 21st century when we will expect an improvement
of
digital imaging and transfer technology. Under such circumstances, comprehensive
scientific journal," Nikkei Science" has held "Computer Visualization
Contest - looking
for the visualizing technology and its practical use" every year, for
the purpose of diffusing
the visualization.
In this 4th year, we open "Computer Visualization Symposium '98"
and hold a contest. This
Symposium is planned to make people know that all the works presented are
outstanding, and
we are very pleased if this Symposium becomes a place for exchanging information
among
researchers through their presentations.
All the presented works in Symposium will be reported in Nikkei Science
(available on
December 25) and introduced to the public including the 30,000 readers.
This also will be
reported in Nikkei Science's Home Page. You are cordially invited to apply.
Production Eligible for this Contest
Visualization of experimental result :
1. visualization of the experimental result in cosmology, geophysics, meteorology,
visualization
of experimental result in a wind tunnel text, etc.
2. Visualization of analytical result : finite element method analysis,
fluid analysis,
electromagnetic field analysis, sound field analysis, molecular shape
in the chemical
field, etc.

5. Other visualization works : we are looking forward to works that open
a new field of
visualization(economic analysis, environmental issue, traffic issue,
relation between
weather and business, etc.).
6. Virtual reality, artistic CG (game, simulator, etc) : new subjects from
this year.
Computer Visualization Symposium '98
●For '98 Symposium, we select 15 excellent papers.

candidate, that will be
a vacant post. The 15 papers will be selected after adjusted by the
judges. The categories
are flexible in response to the content of the works.
1. Science : cosmology, geology, environment, meteorology, topography,
physics,
chemistry, microscopic, etc.

Judging Standard
The "Judging Standard" is how the works accomplish Computer Visualization
as important
communication tool between "people and people" and "people
and data".
We select the works based on these 3 elements below as judging standard
1. the advance of visualization technology
2. the significance of visualization* and the innovation of the theme
3. the persuasiveness of whole work and presentation
* The significance of visualization : we judge if there is the significance
of visualization in the
work, and what we can newly understand by visualization. This contest
do not judge only
the academic excellence, but select the works based on how works explain
and
communicate to amateurs, with easy and effective way to understand, by
using data
from calculations (layout, color coordinate, etc.).
* The performance in the presentation at the Symposium is not judged, but
please explain as
simple as the amateurs can understand.
